St. Sava / White Manor

Historic Milwaukee, Inc.

Its major landmark is an ornate Byzantine church, surely an unexpected sight in this semi-suburban neighborhood. The picturesque domes of St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral tower over a community of quiet streets, well-kept homes, and immaculate lawns. After World War II, a procession of South Siders moved out to the fields west of 51st Street, and at the head of the parade was one of Milwaukee's smallest but most cohesive ethnic groups: the Serbs. In 1945 St. Sava's Serbian congregation purchased land at 51st and Oklahoma; four years later they built American Serb Memorial Hall on a corner of the property.
