Maryland
Avenue Montessori School worked with Latino Earth Partnership to replace
asphalt and turf with native plantings, edible fruit trees and permeable
pathways on highly visible school grounds. Students, teachers and community
members designed and implemented the project, learning about stormwater
abatement from these landscape transformations. The aim of the project was to
educate across disciplines, bringing water stewardship and cultural
perspectives to the forefront while showcasing to the community at-large
innovative approaches for reducing stormwater pollution. This restoration enhances
and protects the Milwaukee River watershed and is a model for schools and
communities throughout Milwaukee.
