Over 1,000 ash trees that were affected by the emerald ash
borer were removed in the winter of 2017-2018. The City of Racine and Weed Out!
Racine restored the area in the spring of 2018 to avoid soil erosion
and siltation of the Root River. The outcome hoped for is that the remaining
trees and shrubs will survive and the seeded ground layer will thrive. The far-reaching
outcome is having a diversity of native species and reduced erosion into the
Root River, and an enhanced experience for people. The overall aim is to have a
functioning ecosystem that contributes to improved water quality in the river
and Lake Michigan, supports wildlife, and enhances life for residents that use
the park.
