The Urban Ecology Center converted an area of its land
near the Milwaukee Rotary Centennial Arboretum into an ephemeral pond during
the growing season in 2017. The creation of the ephemeral pond will improve the
health of the adjacent stretch of the Milwaukee River through reduced sediment
run-off. This project also includes the planting of wetland and upland
trees around the ephemeral pond area to shade the site and keep the water cool.
The pond will serve as habitat for birds and insects as well as an educational
tool.
