Sweet Water funded the building of a Green Infrastruc-ture
Education Area (GIEA). The project area converted standing water and turf
into a rain garden, wetland basin, and turtle home. The GIEA was planned,
built, maintained and planted primarily by City of Milwaukee First Nations
students during the summer of 2017. Age appropriate tasks were given to 60 elementary
and middle school students who participated in summer programming offered
in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools' First Nations Studies and the Ho-Chunk
Nation. GI curriculum was also taught to learners of all ages throughout the
2017 growing season.
