It has the look and feel of an older suburb. Quiet streets, substantial homes, an obvious feeling of pride--these have been the hallmarks of the Rufus King neighborhood since settlement began in the first decades of the twentieth century. The neighborhood takes its name from a public school at its center. Like the school, the neighborhood has undergone sweeping changes in recent decades, but one quality has remained constant. For every resident--from the Germans of the 1920s to the African Americans of the twenty-first century--the neighborhood has been a symbol of solid achievement.
